Arctic plants talk

Plants of the arctic will be the subject of talk to Egham Garden and Allotments Association, when they meet at the Manor Farm Day Centre, on Thursday, January 8, at 7.30pm.

Guest speaker, Dr P Brandham, from Kew Gardens, will present the topic, entitled, 'Arctic and Alpine' plants.

A retired Egham man was fined £1,000, seven years after converting his garage to house his pregnant daughter while she waited for council housing.

Derek Payne, 69, of Hurst Lane, appeared at Woking Magistrates Court, charged with failure to comply with an enforcement notice requiring him to remove a cooker and bath from his garage.

Payne, who admitted the charge and had to pay costs of £350, said the conversion of his garage was carried out through necessity, rather than choice.

A Christmas fair will be held on Friday, December 5 at the Hythe Community Primary School, Thorpe Road, Egham Hythe, from 3pm-5pm.

Father Christmas will be there along with a number of stalls featuring tombola, gifts and crafts, as well as a performance of festive carols by the school choir.

A Christmas shopping evening will be held on Thursday, November 20, at the Hythe Community Primary School, Thorpe Road, Egham Hythe, from 7pm-9.30pm.

Organised by the Parent Teacher Association, the evening will feature stalls run by craftsmen and charities in the area selling seasonal gifts and decorations.

A community liaison forum is being held on Tuesday, November 18, at Royal Holloway, University of London in the main lecture theatre of the Founder's Building, at 7pm.

The hour-long forum, held jointly between the college and the students' union, is to give residents the chance to raise any issues or concerns they have directly with the college.

Library refurbished

Books will never have been so easy to borrow, now that Egham Library has been refurbished.

New, self issue terminals have been installed so that borrowers can issue and return their own books, plus the carpets and shelving have all been redecorated.

The children's library has a new, castle turret entrance and large colourful murals on the wall.

The Library officially re-opens at 9am on Tuesday, November 25.

Art group demonstration

Thameside Art Group are hosting an art demonstration on Wednesday, November 19, from 7.30pm-9.30pm, in the small hall of the Hythe Social Centre, Thorpe Road.

Ben Manchip will give a demonstation of watercolour.

Entrance to the demonstration is £2.

The plant, which grows with astonishing speed, has become the bane of thousands of allotment owners, the root system being such that it can regenerate from very little remaining material if pulled from the ground, and can even force its way through concrete, affecting building sites.

Thorpe Lea Primary School in Egham got a boost to its health education when Sainsbury delivered a free kit to allow pupils to grow their own food.

The kit, delivered by store manager of the Staines branch,Peter Shaw, on Wednesday last week (1) includes gardening equipment such as trowels and watering cans.
