Student volunteer wins national award
A Royal Holloway student has won an national award for setting up a pioneering volunteering scheme.
Robin Green, a psychology student from Royal Holloway has been named as a regional winner in the Nationwide community and heritage awards for his role in recruiting and training a team of eight student volunteers to tutor a group of refugees and asylum seekers in computer technology.
The 21-year-old said: "I was very surprised and happy to receive the Nationwide award."
"I am very grateful to the people I worked with on the project, and have gained a lot from the experience -I enjoyed helping other people and managing a team, and to receive such positive feedback has been extremely rewarding.
The skills they developed are invaluable in this increasingly technological age and will be hugely beneficial to their future careers.
Phil Simcock, community action volunteer co-ordinator at the college, said: "Robin's involvement has been an encouragement not only to his team of student peers and the young refugees, but also to a broader group of people as this fantastic idea is put into practice across other beneficiaries to make an even larger impact in the local community."
