New teachers will help dyslexic kids
Egham based Dyslexia Action held its first graduation ceremony for teachers who successfully completed their Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma by Blended E-Learning at Royal Holloway University last Friday.
Dyslexia Action trains approximately 150 teachers per year and accounts for one third of all university graduates who qualify as specialist dyslexic and literacy teachers.
Head of training at Dyslexia Action, Anne Sheddick, said: "We are extremely proud of all of those who have gained this level of qualification.
"The Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma by Blended E-Learning qualifies teachers to become a specialist teacher in dyslexia and literacy. Such teachers are particularly important given that approximately 10 per cent of the UK population, some 2-3 children in every classroom, are dyslexic."
As identified by the organisation, one of the barriers that prevents dyslexic children from achieving in the classroom is the lack of expertise on the issue in the education system. Now, with courses to educate teachers on dyslexia youngsters, the hope is that a greater degree of understanding will arise as a result of the qualifications.
Sarah White, who will receive the tutor of the year award, commented: "The specialist teacher role, in any environment, is highly personalised, which is why the role of Dyslexia Action, in setting consistent standards, is vital."
