waitrose-site-egham1-22.jpgA traffic warden was left 'traumatised' after being knocked over in Egham by a motorist who he had slapped with a ticket.

The enforcement officer had issued a penalty charge to Alex Charles Morris, 24, at the Runnymede Council-run Precinct Car Park in Church Road (pictured), for failing to display the minimum 50p ticket.

A furious Morris, of Quincy Road, Egham, knocked the warden to the ground with the car as he drove off, inflicting cuts to his arm and leg and leaving the officer shaken.

The incident, which occurred in May, resulted in Morris being brought before Woking Magistrates Court on September 11 where he was convicted of assault and sentenced Morris to 60 hours unpaid work.

He must also pay £350 prosecution costs and £300 in compensation to the traffic warden.

Runnymede councillor Pat Roberts, who chairs the Economic Development Committee - responsible for car parks, said: "Nobody doing their job should be in risk for their lives.

"The civil enforcement officer had a legitimate reason to issue Alex Morris a penalty charge notice for parking without making payment. The outcome of the court case has been the right one.

"The incident would have been avoided if Morris had paid to park, which costs as little as 50p per hour."
