Soup kitchen opens for Egham's needy
An empty retail unit in Egham has been converted into a Christmas kitchen, offering food and refreshments for the hungry and lonely.
The new kitchen, in The Precinct, opened on Saturday December 13 and was transformed through a combined effort of local churches, Egham Chamber of Commerce, who offered the free loan of the shop unit and donations from Runnymede Borough Council and local business Orchard Kitchens.
It will provide hot drinks, soup and light lunches to visitors in a cafe-style environment designed to give people the chance to meet and socialise with people during the cold, festive weeks ahead.
The kitchen is being staffed by Runnymede volunteer organisation, Besom, who also helped to organise the its opening.
Besom volunteer, Mandie Shirnia, said: "Christmas is such a special time, but it can also be a stressful and lonely time.
"I'm so thrilled with the way the business community and local churches have pulled together to make this happen, with so many people giving freely their time or resources, to get this project off the ground in only a couple of weeks."
The kitchen will be open every day, except Sundays, from 10.30am-6pm until Boxing Day.
